Scolded by Leawood Family Physicians

So I am finally well from being sick with the flu.  I got sick two weeks ago late on a Friday night…fever.  My oldest daughter had just been to the doctor that day and tested positive for enfluenza.  Awesome.  So Saturday I went to a Minute Clinic at CVS to get tested and hopefully get started on the same medication as my daughter.  I really didn’t want Nick or Emma to get sick.  It was an hour wait, which I expected, but I got meds and Emma got meds, (for preventative reasons as she had been exposed too), and we were on our way.  Saturday was bad- Sunday was really bad.  Monday I started to feel better and then I got a little more human each day.  Now here comes the kicker-  Emma and I recieved a letter from my doctor’s office.

“Dear Patient,  We have been made aware of your recent visit to a retail health clinic…We would like to remind you that our physicians cover their own call 24 hours a day during the week with one physician on call every weekend and holiday.  We also have extended office hours until 9PM on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and leave several appointment slots open each day for emergency visits.”

Ok- stop right there.   I’m sorry your private investigator didn’t give you guys all the facts.  I went to the clinic on Saturday around 11:00am.  What do you think the doctor on-call would have told me if I had called them and said, “I think I have the flu.”  See I know what they say- especially if they are NOT your doctor.  I have dealt with almost every single doctor in that practice, and if your doctor is not on-call, they really don’t want to mess with you.  Maybe if I was having a baby and breeding more patients for them I would get some special acutal treatment.

I will skip all the middle parts about how their role is to “manage your overall healthcare” and how the “use of retail clinics actually fragments the continuity of your health care” because THIS my friends is my favorite part…..

“…the doctors at Leawood Family Physicans feel that we can best control the quality and cost of your health care needs and provide safe, comprehensive care for our patients.  If you have any suggestions of how we may be of better service to you, please let us know.”

See that’s the problem.  I am in control of my health care needs.  Not them.  I took my health care needs into my own hands and got the treatment I needed when I needed it.  I find that to be responsible.  Emma and Nick did not get the flu, I got better faster b/c I recieved meds in the 48 hours you have to start meds when you get the flu.  Trust me… I will be letting them know when I have them transfer all of our family medical records somewhere else.
